Beef City Closure

On the eve of the Toowoomba Futurity, one of  Toowoombas largest abattoir and feedlots has announced a closure. Beef City near Toowoomba has announced a closure fortwo weeks informing 1000 workers that there will be no work for them for the next two weeks. Ian Mclachlan one of the Toowoomba Futurity organisers and spokesman for the Australasian Meat Industry Employees Union said on the ABC . “I think it’s because of what’s taken place with the tsunami over there, that the meat is not being sold like it used to and I’m told that there’s a lot of tonnes of meat in storage,” he said.
“I believe that Beef City plant wants a fortnight breather to try to clear some product.”
Most of the abattoirs meat is chilled for export, this combined with the pressure to ban live meat exports is not good news for the Australian Beef industry, it will be interesting to see what effect this will have on future show organisers sourcing cattle supplies for cutting events Australia wide.
